The tailstock wheels work in the same way as the workhead, except they are located on the moving slide used for part clamping. This ensured that for any length part loaded into the edge sanding machine, the wheels would be auto-located to remove only the unwanted material.
The vitrified diamond wheels allow for a long tool life before removal and re-dress is required. Wheel change procedures were designed to allow quick change and re-alignments.
The edge sanding machine slides and components are oriented inverted, allowing dust and debris to fall downward. They are also sealed from the abrasive removed material using labyrinth seals, Kevlar bellows, and where necessary, air-purge.
The workhead is belt driven. Workhead RPM is controlled using a frequency drive to optimize rotational rate.
